Bukit Timah Food Center Part 2: Fried Carrot Cake

I was free today, so I went back to Bukit Timah Food Center again. I will skip the introduction of this place since I did it during the last post.

Fried Carrot Cake($2/$3/$4). I ordered this from the most famous and established stall located at the 2nd row. One good thing this stall is that they deliver the food right to your table unlike most stalls.

Taste: The carrot cake is really soft yet springy; it lacks flavor though. The carrot cake would taste much better if it is fried longer or fried with a more fragrant oil. The portion given is also quite little, the above picture shows a $3 portion of the carrot cake. I definitely recommend eating this with the chili as mentioned that the flavor might not satisfy you. However, with the chili, it is able to enhance the flavor of the carrot cake.

Conclusion: A simple treat, good to go with a cup of sugar cane drink. Ask for chili if you are having this! Recommended!

Seafood Gravy Hor Fun (makan place)

Once again, good food from Makan Place.
A generous portion of Horfun and seafood given, selling at only $3.00. One thing i like about this Horfun is, it also includes pieces of fresh tender fish which is not commonly seen in Horfun. Of course the gravy plays a very big role, making the Horfun smooth so that it is easy to swallow. Furthermore the gravy is mixed with egg, adding taste to it. The seafood is fresh and generously given, not overly cooked and therefore making it chewy. This big plate of Horfun is enough to satisfy your hunger. Do go to makan place and try it out!

Penang Char Kway Teow

Hungry for some authentic Penang food but don't know where to find? Try this one:

Penang Char Kway Teow ($4.00/$5.00)

The cook really knows how to fry delicious kway teow. Firstly, the ingredients are really fresh, like seriously. For example, I who always hate the taste of cockles, could also eat them all, just because they are free of the usual heavy taste. The prawns are also big, juicy, and taste like they are just caught from the sea. Awesome fresh taste. Now to the kway teow part. The kway teow they use are the small and thin kind, and they are really springy, and also deliciously cooked. The texture of the kway teow is what you always expect a wok-fry zi cha to be. Words just could not describe the taste of the food itself. Heavenly.

133 Penang Authentic
Location:
116 Upper Bukit Timah Road
#02-201 Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre

Rating: Not only they serve delicious kway teow, they also sell penang lor mee, prawn mee too.

Chicken Rice @ Bukit Timah Food Center

Bukit Timah Food Center, a place where good food resides. It is quite conveniently located near Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Many students will often eat here when they have long break time as well. The place was refurbished and all stalls are down for business for quite a while, it is finally back.

The famous chicken rice stall. $3.50. Always having one of the longest queue, mostly office workers who will order large amounts of chicken rice for take-away. The queue is really slow, I queued for around 15 minutes that day. But when I tasted it, I felt that it is really worth the amount of time for queuing. I ordered the steamed chicken as I wanted to taste the original taste of the chicken and added two braised eggs (50 cents each).

Taste: The chicken meat is really succulent and tender, while still maintaining the original taste of chicken. I feel what makes the chicken so tasty is their secret ingredient, the sauce. The sauce is usually a mixture of chicken oil as well as soy-sauce, but the sauce is so flavorful and it goes really well with the chicken pieces. The sauce is added the last and poured onto the chicken pieces together with the chinese parsley which gives the chicken a touch of freshness. The braised eggs are well braised, probably for a long time as it absorbed the soy sauce mixture in the process of cooking.

Conclusion: To sum it up, the chicken rice was awesome, definitely a lot better than many stores up there. Taste it to believe it. It is also value for money and the amount of chicken given is quite generous, I still have plenty of chicken after finishing the rice. Try this out!

Simply Curry (Makan Place)

I would prefer something nice and warm after my lessons and therefore, Simply Curry located at Ngee Ann Polytechnic Makan Place is my all times favourite. Of course 'Simply Curry' does not only sell curry, they do cook their own soup and give the portions with generous potatoes and chicken. Accompanied with a bowl of rice, the soup is enough to make one satisfied. As it is own cooked without addition of MSG, it makes it a healthier choice. Surprisingly, the soup actually taste like home cooked. Selling at only $3.50 with two big pieces of chicken meat, it is definitely worth trying for. For my own opinion, potatoes and carrots should not be cooked for such a long time as it spoils the texture and taste. However, this store has done a great job in making sure that the temperature when cooking is adjusted nicely so that the potatoes and carrots are not over cooked. For those that would like to try something that taste just as nice as home cooked food, this would be a must to try!

Ban Mian (poolside)

Looking for something that does not taste heavy with seasonings?
Ban Mian at Ngee Ann Polytechnic (poolside) would be a good choice. Selling at only $2.50, this bowl of noodles would be best eaten hot. Ikan Bilis and onions help to add in more flavor to the soup and the amazing part is it stays crispy and crunchy even though it is soaked in the soup. Egg lovers would bound to love this dish. A raw egg is added in to this hot bowl of noodles. You can eat it with the the noodles mixed it all up with the egg yolk or letting the egg yolk cooked a bit more to solid state in the hot soup. My recommendation would be mixing the egg yolk together with the noodles, so that the noodles become smooth. The shop sells many other types of noodles as well, be it soup base or sauce base, there are many side dishes such as fried dumplings to satisfy hunger. One more good thing about eating this ban mian would be : its a healthier choice ! Therefore do go try it out.

Simply Curry! Ngee Ann's own curry stall!

Curry chicken ($3.80)

Curry, anyone? The curry from this stall is really good, especially the curry chicken. The chicken itself is tender and generously given, a good portion for those big eater like me. The potatoes are considered an extra bonus to the curry, as it is chewy and also not overcooked. As for the curry, it is thick enough and the fragrance itself makes even my friend wanted to try some of it. Good food.

The stall also sell buns that gives you a taste of childhood all over again. Simply love these buns. What's more, the price for it is just $1 for 3 of these crispy and irresistible food! So head down to makanplace @ np to try the curry today!

Crispy Fish Alfredo - Hungry Jack Part 2

To fix my craving on pastas earlier this week during my break, I went back to Hungry Jack @ Makan Place. This time round, I ordered something different...

Crispy Fish Alfredo, $5.50. I decided to be experimental and ordered something I've never tried before. It looks exactly the the carbonara, just that it is served with a piece of crispy fish now. I asked for pasta up-size again which costs $1; to fill up this hungry monster's tummy.

Taste: It tastes very similar to the carbonara, I almost couldn't feel the difference. But the difference is, the sauce is thicker and it tastes "cheesier". If you feel that the carbonara is doesn't have a strong flavor to satisfy you, the alfredo will definitely satisfy you. The crispy fish is no doubt crispy yet soft in the inside. The good thing about it is that it remains warm inside as you enjoy you pasta as the batter is able to retain heat and moisture in the fish. However, the batter lacks seasoning, it would be even better if there is a special seasoning to it. Thankfully, the fish wasn't overcooked and dry.

Saizeriya Ristorante E Caffe @ Bukit Timah Plaza [Part 2]

As mentioned by the last post, this restaurant is cheap and and affordable. Free flow of drinks for just an extra $1.50, tasty food, makes it an ideal place for the students to dine in.

The Asari Clams Spaghetti ($7.40)

When served, it is surprisingly that the cook did a good job arranging the clams in such a manner. It looks pretty delicious and really, the food is not bad after all. The clams tasted fresh and is generously given, and the soup is just right in flavor. Mushrooms are also quite flavor-enhancing, providing an unique taste to the dish. However, what it lacks is the taste of the spaghetti, which is pretty plain for a soup spaghetti. But overall, it is still a worthy dish to try, and also do consider it's generous amount of clams!

Rating: Worth trying!

Focaccia Garlic Bread ($2.20)

The food looks pretty plain when it is being served, but trust me, it is really a good substitute when the prata are not around. At first bite, it tasted like a normal bread, just that it is a fresh, hot and fluffy one that really gives you the feeling of happiness. The garlic part at the middle tasted like those garlic breads served in french restaurants, so it is really good.

Rating: Definitely a heartwarming dish!

Picnic Ham Sandwich (Atrium)

Finding something nice to satisfy your hunger, yet wants it to be fast and convenient ? Picnic Ham sandwich would be the best choice for you. Located at Atrium, you would find a bread shop where they sell nice and warm sandwiches. Although it looks just like any normal sandwiches, the taste is different. Normally sandwiches are served cold when you buy it in supermarkets. But here in Ngee Ann Poly, they sell it warm as the breads are toasted before hand, making it slightly more crispy than normal bread. Lettuce makes it crunchy so that it is nice to chew on and most importantly, they uses fresh lettuce. Which would be a good and healthy choice for everyone. Also, most of us have the trouble of swallowing sandwiches since it is quite dry. But in this case, the picnic ham sandwich has adequate amount of sauces like mayonnaise which makes it taste a bit sweeter and not so dry to swallow on. The price for the sandwich is $2.50, still acceptable. And of course there are many more different combinations which you would like to try it out like the egg mayo, tuna and chicken mayo sandwich.
Do go try it out !

Saizeriya Ristorante E Caffe @ Bukit Timah Plaza

This Italian restaurant located at Bukit Timah Plaza also offers students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic another option for dining in. The food here is affordable as GST and Service Charge are not charged, making it an ideal place for students. With a top up of $1.50, you can enjoy free flow of drinks. A wide variety of drinks are available from fruit juices and fizzy drinks to hot beverages. However, do not expect high quality food.

Cheesy chicken steak with pork, $8.20. All my friends recommended me to try this out when I first dined here. Basically, this dish consists of a cheesy chicken steak, some flavorful pork, a few slices of baked potato and some fresh corn; all topped with a delicious gravy. The highlight here is the chicken steak, it is really thick and juicy.  Okay, here's the verdict.

Taste: The chicken steak wasvery well cooked; due to it's factor that it is thick and it can prevent lose of juices during cooking. However, it lacks a little bit of seasoning. It tastes flavorful only on the outside which is the skin, no doubt it still remains juicy in the inside. The pork is very well-seasoned but the portion given is rather small. Only a few thin slices of baked potatoes are given, it tastes average as well. The dark roux meat sauce is what that really gives the dish it's flavor; it is slightly sweet and it really goes really well with chicken and potatoes.>

Squid ink pasta, $5.80, one of the few interesting dishes on the menu. So, I decided to try this out. As it's name suggests, it is pasta with squid ink as the sauce. It doesn't look very appetizing;  dull and black as compared to other pastas.

Taste: For those who have never tried squid ink/paste before, it tastes like squid and rather "fishy". Unless you love seafood, otherwise you might not want to try this out. The pasta is quite bland, you can only taste the saltiness of the squid ink and pretty much nothing else. A stingy portion of squid is given in the pasta; thankfully the squid is not overcooked.

P.S. You wouldn't want to eat this on your first date or when your crush is around. Unless you want your crush to look at your black lips and your stained teeth when you smile at them.

Conclusion: The portions given for some dishes can be quite little. Overall, it is quite value for money. Do try out the chicken steak with pork, highly recommended!

Grilled Chicken Carbonara

Looking for good western cuisine dishes such as pastas and steaks? Yes, you are on the right site, right post.

The Grilled Chicken Carbonara is probably one of the dishes that most people will purchase at the stall Hungry Jack located at Makan Place. There is also another variation of this dish which is served with meatballs; pick your meat well.

The queue is usually not very long as compared to other stores during peak hours as the waiting time for the food is very long. After you have ordered your dish, you can see the chefs cooking only after receiving your order. This is why the food at this stall is so tasty, it is only prepared after you have placed your order. It is definitely worth waiting for good food. However, the price of this dish costs $5.50. It is slightly expensive but it is definitely worth the price; it is okay to indulge once in a while. Pasta up-size is also available with an additional of $1.

Taste: I'm a fan of cream-based pasta sauce, so this was one of the few dishes that I first tried out from the stall. The sauce is full of flavor, rich and very creamy. The chopped herbs definitely enhanced the flavor of the sauce too. I prefer a thicker sauce; sometimes the sauce can be quite watery when the chef doesn't drain the pasta for a longer time. The chicken's skin is also very well seasoned and crispy. Sometimes, the chicken can be slightly overcooked. If you are lucky, you will get to chew onto a perfectly cooked-pink chunk of chicken.

Overall, this was one of my favorite stalls and dish in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. As a freshmen of Ngee Ann Polytechnic, I was very surprised that I could find such good food here. The price of this dish is slightly expensive but it is still affordable and can be on par or even better than some other pasta outlets. So delicious, so try it out! Definitely recommended!

Kaki Fuyong

When you are in Makanplace in Ngeeann Poly(NP), be sure to check out the stall Japanese Cuisine for their famous dish known as Kaki Fuyong. It consists of just a simple egg omelette on a hot plate, sauced up and then finish it with a few dices of crispy chicken.

Even though the dish looks simple and plain, the food is deliciously good, resulting in its ever staying popularity level among the students. For example, the omelette itself is not that simple. It tasted salty, yet sweet at the same time. One reason could be the sauce, in which enhanced the fragrances of the dish by ten fold. The chicken itself tasted awesomely good, with a sweet and crunchy feeling tingling in your mouth. With a bowl of rice to complete the dish and the set costing at a affordable price of $3.50, this is one thing you should not miss.

Hence if you have any extra time to spare, head down to NP to try it out today!

Grilled Fish with rice

No doubt western food wins the hearts of all !! The western stall at poolside canteen attracts people because of their big portion of food, the aroma and most importantly the winning factor : savoury sauce!! Meat lovers would bound to love this.

The reason why i would like to introduce this dish is because the fish is very tender as it is grilled and sauce is added on to it. By grilling the fish, it adds texture to it. Most importantly, the grilled fish absorbs the sauce, enhancing the taste and flavour as well as making it easier to chew on. The sauce is the important factor in this dish, it taste abit sweet and is recommended to eat it together with the rice, a good combination. Mayonnaise, chilli and ketchup sauce are all self-service. Do add mayonnaise sauce to the grilled fish for bonus as it helps to further add on the taste.  For such a big portion, selling at $4.00 is a reasonable price.

Therefore do come to poolside (canteen 2) to try it out !!

Japanese Stall at Poolside (Canteen 2)

What's this?
This is set number 7 from the Japanese stall at Poolside canteen, also known as canteen 2. Poolside canteen is located at Blk 18 in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. It includes fried fish and chicken chunks, with curry sauce on the rice. The curry is a Japanese curry, so it's sweet, and not spicy. So, those who do not or cannot take spicy food, don't worry! It's not spicy at all! They do not serve their sets with Miso Soup, but with Seaweed Soup. It's nice!
Why this?
I eat this set very often, because it's one of the nicer food in poolside canteen. It costs $4.50. Although it isn't very cheap, but it is still affordable. This Japanese stall attracts a lot of people.
Is there any other variations?
Of course there is! They have sets without curry, with curry and even udon! It is definitely worth to try it when you are unsure of what to get!

Rating: 4/5! Try it!
Location: Ngee Ann Poly's Poolside Canteen (Canteen 2)!
